The problem

The platform was a 25-year-old international banking system serving a highly regulated, multi-country environment. Years of incremental changes buried the next step under layered navigation, made verification status opaque, and left transaction assistants and corporate customers holding complex country, currency, and transfer rules in their heads. Inconsistent patterns and accessibility gaps compounded the load. The work was a UX reconsideration: make the rules and the state of each transaction legible in the interface itself.

Redesigned transaction overview dashboard showing totals, volume trends over time, and recent transactions with clear status states.

My role

Product Designer — Enterprise Platform Modernization

  • Collaborated with Product Owners, Subject Matter Experts, and a 20+ member Scrum team across a three-year global engagement.
  • Reconsidered core navigation so transaction assistants could move through multi-step cross-border workflows without losing context.
  • Designed a verification and status model that made compliance state — verified, pending, action required, blocked — visible at every step for staff and corporate customers.
  • Translated complex country, currency, and transfer rules into progressive, in-context guidance instead of external reference documents.
  • Established a working framework and style guide based on a preliminary system audit, creating a shared language for stakeholders and developers.
  • Researched and integrated accessibility needs into interactions and design patterns from the start.
  • Partnered with a Content Writer to align system terminology across segments and geographies.

Process

  1. Step 01

    System & Workflow Audit

Audited the legacy platform with SMEs to map real cross-border workflows, cataloging where navigation dead-ended, where rules lived outside the product, and where verification status was ambiguous.

  2. Step 02

    Navigation & Status Model

Restructured information architecture and task flows, and defined a consistent verification-status language so users always know what is required next and why — by country, currency, and transfer type.

  3. Step 03

    Rules Made Legible

Surfaced country, currency, and transfer rules progressively at the point of decision, so transaction assistants and customers could act without memorizing protocol tables.

  4. Step 04

    Accessibility & Content Alignment

Integrated accessibility standards and aligned terminology across segments, reducing risk and ambiguity in a highly regulated environment.

The real win was not a new UI. It was reconsidering the experience so complex cross-border rules and verification status became visible in the flow of work — turning institutional knowledge held by a few experts into something any transaction assistant or customer could follow with confidence.
Enterprise overview

Generalized for confidentiality

Client and platform details have been generalized. Screens, metrics, and workflows are described in generic terms; nothing here identifies a specific brand, product, or dataset.

Strategic framing

A banking platform as a shared operating layer

24/7 Banking was a UX reconsideration, not a re-skin: clearer navigation through cross-border workflows, transparent verification status, and complex country, currency, and transfer rules made understandable in context — supported by one design system and one standardized language.

Navigation that follows the work

Restructured task flows so transaction assistants and customers move through multi-step cross-border processes without losing context or the next required action.

Verification status made visible

A consistent status language — verified, pending, action required, blocked — so compliance state is never a mystery for staff or the customers they support.

Complex rules, in context

Country, currency, and transfer protocol requirements surfaced progressively at the point of decision instead of living in reference documents and expert memory.

Preserve and modernize

Honored the integrity of existing financial workflows while standardizing interactions, terminology, and visual language.

Consensus before pixels

Aligned Product, SMEs, and design around a shared framework before producing high-fidelity screens.

Accessibility by default

Accessibility was integrated into design decisions from the start, reducing risk in a regulated environment.

Platform context

What the platform does

A SaaS trade-finance platform built for multi-bank, multi-currency, multi-time-zone processing — a corporate portal, back-office processing with imaging and workflow, an advanced reporting utility, and an XML/REST integration architecture. Delivered as a service for over 25 years, with an on-premise option for global institutions.

End-to-end digital workflow

Traditional trade, payables, receivables, and cash management in one integrated experience, connected downstream through thousands of fine-grained REST endpoints.

Real-time global visibility

Reporting across an institution's entire global business from a single source, so operations can be monitored in real time across regions.

Configurable to local standards

One global platform configurable to local market standards while holding bank-wide service and compliance standards steady.

Recognition

An award-winning platform

The platform has been repeatedly recognized by leading global trade and finance publications during and after the modernization work.
